Nov. 15th, 2009 @ 04:39 pm It's for the kids!
Hey, D-Peeps. My lovely significant other, [info]sistermaryeris, is doing a food drive for three SE 122nd area elementary schools. We're looking for places to put food drop-boxes that are either in the vicinity of the 122nd/Division/Powell/Holgate area, or locations that are just likely to have nice people drop off non-perishable foods.

The schools, Mill Park, Menlo Park, and Gilbert Heights, all have around 80% of their kids qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. At Gilbert Heights, Sandi's after-school kids also get free dinners on some nights. During extended breaks, they're not able to access these resources, so we'd like to stock up their cupboards a bit.

We realize, of course, that for many of us it's hard enough just putting food on our own table. But if you can help by taking a food box, if you work somewhere that might want to donate food or dollars, or if you just want to help in some way, please let us know in comments.

The drive runs from now until December 4. Thanks!

Nov. 15th, 2009 @ 07:34 pm belly ache from chicken?
hello! i dont know if anyone is going to be able to help me out, but you never know =]

within the last year or so i began eating meat again, but only natural, organic, hunted, or local meat products. i am fine with turkey, beef, pork, etc.. but for some reason chicken gives me stomach aches. chicken broth doesnt affect me as much as the meat itself, but i still react to it. could it be something in the chicken fat that upsets my stomach? i just think its weird and dont really see why i can eat turkey and not chicken. thank you for any help or advice you can give me!

Nov. 15th, 2009 @ 05:44 pm Yorkshire Pudding!!
oh yeah, and roast beef, too. And gravy, and peas, and roasted carrots, and garlic mashed potatoes. But most importantly, YORKSHIRE PUDDING.

This was my first attempt at this grand and most favourite meal. I did overcook the meat, which I think is a common issue, but it was still so so tasty. I am currently enjoying cold roast beef sandwiches with mustard.

Brought to you by The Cast-Iron Darling!

Nov. 15th, 2009 @ 06:49 pm Freshly Baked Cheese Bread
Tags:
My bread fanaticism began when publishers sent me a copy of Andrew Whitley’s new book, Bread Matters: The State of Modern Bread and a Definitive Guide to Baking Your Own. The book makes the case for bread activism -- avoiding possibly harmful and certainly less wholesome mass-produced bread in favor of making your own. Apart from just a political stance, though, Whitley presents breadmaking as an artform -- and one that doesn't have to be too time-consuming, at that. He calculates that a loaf of bread takes about 30-40 minutes of active work punctuated by periods of waiting.

This was my first experience with letting a sponge ferment for days and baking it into a loaf of delicious bread -- and I'm hooked on the experience, from mixing, to kneading, to proofing, to baking, to eating! My boyfriend and I ate our cheese bread with chicken and dumplings, and then used the leftovers for something decidedly more sinister . . . :)

recipe and photos, including a picture of the PERFECT USE for leftover cheese bread )

To read my review of the book Bread Matters, listen to me waxing poetic about bread, see a photo of how entertaining kneading can be, or just to see more pictures of that amazing breakfast sandwich, please head over to my baking blog, Willow Bird Baking!

I found a very cute, small Siamese kitty in my backyard a few months ago. I thought he was the neighbors but after talking with a few people on the block, it turns out he is an abandoned stray--probably abandoned by a certain person who lived in one of the houses that got foreclosed on here. So I have started feeding it, and the cat is very affectionate--let me pet him/her immediately, likes to sit in my lap, etc. This cat is very sweet and would make a great pet, but alas, cannot keep it because of my mean cat who would not be so nice to another kitty in the house.

First of all, where could I take this cat to see if it is neutered and to check for a microchip just in case I'm wrong about who the previous owner is? Is there anywhere that would do that for free? I actually would pay if I had to though.

And the inevitable question... does anyone want an awesome cat? If I could find the right home for this guy (I won't be charging a fee as that feels weird, but I would want to check up on the person and home it would go to) I will pay for it to be fixed if it isn't, and I'll get a vet visit taken care of as well. I can also give you a cat carrier. I would like to see the cat go to an indoor-only home.

I have a picture of the cat that can be sent through email.

I can't think of a better place to put this, but if you can, please let me know!

I'm not sure if anyone here has experience with food allergies, but neither do I. I've never had a reaction to any food (that I've noticed), but last night I got a headache that lasted about 20 minutes each time I ate a cupcake from Whole Foods (yes, we couldn't resist their little turkey-topped cupcakes while grocery shopping). I thought the headache was odd after my first one, and then later in the night (I told you I couldn't resist them) it happened again within 5 minutes of consuming another. Here's a picture of the ingredient list that I'm pretty darn sure I've eaten everything on there previously. Though I'm not noticing any mention of the chocolate pieces that were parts of the turkeys, so maybe their ingredient list isn't so complete. Thoughts?

I just moved into an old house with poor insulation and my bedroom is freezing! I really don't want to have to just run a space heater all winter long. I'm working on sealing the window already. Any suggestions on what else I can do relatively cheaply and easily that will help? I'm renting and don't plan on staying for more than a year or two, so I don't want to make any large home-improvement investments. Ideas?

Nov. 15th, 2009 @ 05:51 pm Cotton Dishcloths
First actual post here, but longtime crocheter and lurker.

I'm working up christmas presents for various people and suddenly realized... I'm actually going to get this stuff done. Before Christmas, no less. (I've come a long way from the 12-year-old who gave her father an unfinished scarf with the promise to finish it.) So I'm looking about and thinking, I have 3/4 of a very large ball of Bernat Handicrafter yarn, and my Mom could probably use some reusable dishcloths. But, I know absolutely that she will want to be able to throw any such dishcloth through the hot water cycle on the washing machine, and then through the dryer, just as she does with towels. So the question is: how much should I trust that these things won't shrink when she does? I'd love to use up the yarn on such a practical project, and I'm fine with making them big with the expectation that they'll shrink, but I want to know ahead of time. Anyone out there with advice?

Nov. 15th, 2009 @ 01:36 pm US: Send Coat Hangers to Pro-Choice Dems Who Voted For Stupak
Current Mood: active
From TPM.

Credo Action Pro-Choice Petition Website

This isn't for the squeamish. It's about as hardball and brutal as it gets.

The liberal group CREDO Action will soon ask over 1,000,000 members to sign a petition condemning the Stupak amendment...and with each signature, CREDO will send a coat hanger to the 20 supposedly pro-choice members of Congress who voted for it.

"We know what happens when women are denied access to reproductive health care including abortion," the petition reads. "And we can't go back to an era of coat hangers and back alley abortions. Reconsider your vote on the Stupak Amendment. Tell House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid that the final health care bill that emerges from the conference committee can't turn the clock back on women's rights."

The email hasn't been sent yet, but you can read the language below the fold.

Nov. 15th, 2009 @ 03:33 pm Cleaning glass/ceramic cooktop
Tags: ,
I know there have been posts about this but I searched the memories and couldn't find anything! My parents are renting a house with an Amana glass/ceramic cooktop and my mom wants to know what the best cleaner for it is. She's obsessive about it - NO streaks! haha. Suggestions? I have seen a few at the store and plenty come up in a google search, but I'm looking for tried and true, I'm tired of hearing her complain every time I come over for dinner :) If anyone recalls the past post(s) about this and can redirect me, please do, and I'll delete. I haven't been able to find them, at least the ones specifically about this kind of cooktop.

Nov. 15th, 2009 @ 01:04 pm window condensation?
i'm working on my first fall/winter season in portland, and the apartment i'm in has some intense window condensation going on. i've never had this issue before living in other places (southwest & east coast), even in places with older windows in older buildings (like the one i'm in now).

sooooo, is it something to worry about? it obviously makes it hard to see out, but oh well on that front. i just don't want to be accepting this as a wet wintery fact when it could in fact be a bad thing, leading to mildew and mold growth, damaging the windows, killing puppies, etc.
